The following are some of the most commonly used traditional Homeopathic remedies for the treatment and prevention of flu like symptoms:

Aconite can be often of use in the first 24 hrs and early stages. Sudden onset is characteristic. Such as after exposure to cold, or caught in cold winds and after emotional shock. There is a high fever with a flushed face and constricted pupils, the patient may be restless, anxious and desires cold drinks. 


Arsenicum: The influenza may be accompanied by diarrhoea vomiting or gastroenteritis. Patient is very weak and collapsed and needs company, is very anxious about his health and condition, very restless. Chills and rigors follow fever. Thirst for small sips is present. Patient is extremely cold and wants plenty of covers. Patient wants fresh air. 

Bryonia symptoms come on slowly over a couple of days. The patient is irritable and dull. Wants to be alone, with an extreme thirst for large amounts at frequent intervals. The aching is severe which is much worse from movement. She/he doesn’t want anyone to touch or disturb them. Often accompanied by severe headache worse for the slightest jar or movement even moving the eyes is painful. Pain in chest and back. 

Belladonna has a rapid onset of intense symptoms, with a very high fever, often as high as 105 F, you feel the heat radiate as you approach the patient, they may start hallucinating or be delirious with it. The face is flushing red, the pupils look dilated and the eyes glisten. Generally patient is not thirsty. Hands and feet are icy cold. It is often accompanied by a severe throbbing headache which is worse light and a bounding pulse may be present. It is worse from motion and jarring.


Eupatorium perfoliatum is for severe flu with high fever. There is an extremely painful aching in muscles, and excruciating pains as if bones were breaking. The back may be excruciatingly painful. The chills begin in the lower back. There may be violent rigors which are worse after drinking. Person is thirsty for cold drinks. Worse from 7 to 9 am. 


Gelsemium has a slow onset over a couple of days which is the opposite of belladonna and aconite situation. There is great weakness and exhaustion, fatigue, trembling and shivering. A feeling of general heaviness prevails. The head is hard to lift from the pillow, the limbs are weak and shaky, the eye lids close themselves from the exhaustion, feel heavy and they may be droopy or half-open. The chills run up and down the back. Patient is not thirsty.

Nux vomica will have high fever with rapid onset and horrible chills and rigors. Any uncovering or even any slight motions of air under the bedsheets as patient moves cause intense chills. Generally patient is chilly and better for heat. And has sensitivity to light, noise and odours. The patient wants warm drinks and food. It may be accompanied by a raw sore throat and headache. Patient is very irritable,impatient, cranky and on edge.


Pyrogen is for septic state. There may be a high fever and chills are deep in the bones. Patient feels sore and the bed feels too hard. You may find a great difference between the pulse rate and the temperature. For example you may have high temp with slow pulse, or mild temp with fast pulse. The muscles are aching and there is offensive perspiration and discharges.


Mercurius is good when symptoms of pharyngitis, sinusitis or bronchitis are also present. There may be offensive smelly breath, ulceration, excess salivation, dirty flabby, teeth indented tongue which may feel swollen.The rest of the symptoms are often accompanied by swollen glands and heavy oily offensive profuse perspiration


Baptisia: It is for more advanced situation. Patient may look very dull and fall asleep in the middle of his sentence. The breath is offensive. The bed may feels too hard and a general soreness of body prevails. All the above may be accompanied by putrid diarrhoea and eructations/burping.

Homeopathic Influenzinum 200c, monthly, during winter months when flu is most prevalent may can be used as a preventative
